Adopt-A-Spot Program Charter Member Retires
It had to happen eventually.

Brian Mazellan, proprietor of Timber Creek Landscaping, is relocating to Florida and has given notice that he will no longer be able to maintain the Clinton Avenue Extension stream crossing. Of course, Adopters have given up spots before. People move, get too old, lose interest. As a whole, though, the group shows remarkable loyalty and dedication. Many spots have been adopted by the same groups for over ten years. But Brianís Adopt-A-Spot is special. This was the first adoption in the program. In 1990, not long after the South Plainfield Clean Business Association was formed, Brian came to then-President Emil Leporino, and made a proposal. He said he drove over the stream crossing every day, and it really bothered him to see how much trash was being dumped there, in what should have been a beautiful natural area. He offered to keep it cleaned up periodically. But, he said, he wanted to be held accountable to follow through on this promise. Thus was born the South Plainfield Adopt-A-Spot Program. Modeled on the New Jersey Adopt A Highway program, it allowed for a contractual agreement between a private business or individual and the CBA to remove litter from public land. The CBA provided publicity, cleanup supplies and trash pickup, and the adopter provided the labor. The CBA has kept the Timber Creek Landscaping Adopt-A-Spot sponsor signs posted in the same place for twenty-eight years, and now they are coming down. It had to happen eventually. But we sure are sad to see him go.
